But man have times changes. Because nowadays I don’t even walk down the grocery store aisle that sells that kind of snack! I’m not entirely sure if my taste buds have since matured, or if it’s mental, but the thought of eating something that processed and full of refined sugars makes me queasy! Let alone, feeding that to my children?? (No I don’t have any children… but someday I will!) So I got to thinking… There’s got to be a way to make homemade fruit roll ups, with natural and healthy ingredients. Because in theory, these are the perfect grab-and-go snack! Great for your backpack while hiking, your kid’s lunch, or an after meal treat. So after some serious recipe testing, I found a way! And I’m so excited to share it with you! First things first, have you ever read the list of ingredients in store bought fruit roll ups?!They basically contain everything we’ve learned not to eat… Three of the main ingredients in this product are corn syrup, dried corn syrup and sugar.
Then there’s fruit concentrate. All four of these are broken down by our bodies into sugar, sugar and a little more sugar. High fructose corn syrup has received a lot of hype lately, as it’s the main sweetener in soda and other sugary drinks. Claims have been made that this ingredient has lead to a rise in obesity, and is worse for us when compared to regular table sugar. “At this time, there’s insufficient evidence to say that high-fructose corn syrup is any less healthy than other types of sweeteners” (source). That being said, most of us are consuming too much added sugar in our diets. “The American Heart Association recommends that most women get no more than 100 calories a day of added sugar from any source, and that most men get no more than 150 calories a day of added sugar. That’s about 6 teaspoons of added sugar for women and 9 teaspoons for men” (source). Consuming things like store bought fruit roll ups, sodas, etc is why we’ve been eating too much sugar!
Ergo, let’s make our own fruit roll ups! With fruit as our main ingredient and a little added honey (which is totally optional) to help with the consistency. This way we aren’t adding sweeteners and refined sugars! **Despite the fact that this recipe uses fruit & honey to sweeten the roll ups, it’s still high in sugar. If you’re trying to eat less sugar, then fruit rolls up are something you should probably avoid. Making homemade fruit roll ups is pretty simple, here’s how you do it: First pick your fruit! For this recipe, we swirled together mango and blueberry. These are two of my favorite fruits, and when combined they create one extremely flavorful roll up! Mango is the perfect roll up fruit – smooth and sweet. The blueberries will make your tongue/teeth blue (just a warning for those making these on a first date 🙂 ) Some other flavor combinations we like are: Measure three cups of fruit and add to the blender. Pick whichever fruit you’d like to use in your roll up. K
eep in mind we haven’t tested every fruit (but we will someday 🙂)… I use my Blendtec blender that I’m totally obsessed with for this. I know it’s a big investment to make… but I honestly think I’ve paid for mine 10 times over! If you don’t have a high speed blender, use whatever you have to get this fruit nice and smooth. Each fruit will take a different length of time to dehydrate, have a unique consistency and flavor. To be safe and able to work with all fruits, ensure that you blend ingredients until they’re completely smooth. Then add one Tablespoon of lemon juice and ¼ cup of honey – honey is optional, but I like including it because it adds to the smoothness of the roll up, and of course, makes it even sweeter! If you’re vegan substitute the honey for brown rice syrup. Spread the blended mixture onto a rimmed baking sheet covered with either a silicon baking mat, or parchment paper (I prefer to use unbleached parchment paper!).
You want to make sure the roll up mixture is spread as evenly as possible onto the pan. I use a spatula to spread it around, then hit the pan on the counter a few times to ensure there are no thick or bald areas. Bake at 150 degrees for 6 to 8 hours. It’s important to check the fruit roll ups every hour (or more frequently) to make sure nothing is burning. Rotate the pan every time you check it. You’ll know the roll ups have finished baking when the center is no longer sticky. Let the roll ups cool on the counter completely. If using a silicon mat, invert the baked roll ups onto a sheet of parchment paper (this is what we will keep and roll our fruit roll ups onto!) and peel off the mat. I typically bake this on a sheet of parchment paper and still transfer it to a fresh sheet of parchment, it’s a little cleaner and easier to roll! Cut off the edges of the baked roll ups (I save these for a little snack). Then cut the center area into strips and roll away!
I use kitchen scissors for this, but have seen many people cut the strips with a pizza cutter! Use whatever you think is easiest or have available. If you’re having trouble keeping the fruit roll ups rolled, use a piece of tape of baker’s twine to keep them in place. t us know in the comments below which flavor combos you tried and like! Pour ingredients onto a parchment paper placed inside a rimmed baking sheet. Bake in oven at 150 degrees for 6-8 hours (the roll ups are done cooking when the center is no longer sticky) Pull out of the oven and let it cool completely before cutting. Place the roll ups on a fresh sheet of parchment paper. Cut off the edges, then cut the roll ups into strips. Ro
