Our annual 16 Pack-A-Backpack drive is taking place this Saturday. Thanks to your help and the help from our community partners like the Kelly Cares Foundation, Notre Dame Federal Credit Union, McDonald's, the Better Business Bureau, Goodwill and Meijer, we're able to help thousands of kids who need it the most. However, the need is still great, and that's why we can't wait to see you this weekend. The preparation process is a long one for 16 Pack-A-Backpack. "We started this probably December of last year," explains Michael Fowler, WNDU director of promotions and programming. "It is a pretty crazy day when you are collecting this many school supplies. We kind of have an 'all hands on deck' approach with our staff here at the television station," adds WNDU General Manager John O'Brien. "It's a fun time to bring our staff together and work as a team on something that's so vital to our community." With your help, thousands of kids will start the school year off right.

"It does take a lot of stress off of kids that need help," O'Brien adds. It's easy for you to make a donation. "They can drive up to any one of our locations; they don't even have to get out of their car. We will help them unload the supplies from their car. We will even give them a little thank you from McDonald's for their donation," Fowler explains. From 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, we will have crews in Goshen, St. Joseph, Plymouth and at the WNDU studios in South Bend. We're looking to collect things like backpacks, pencils, paper, filler paper, notebooks, and much more. "You can put together a full backpack for somewhere in the neighborhood of $10, or you can make a monetary donation, and we can take that donation even further," Fowler explains. Your donations don't just stay in one place. WNDU works with agencies in our 10-county viewing area to get your donations where they need to be. "We are going to be doing this for a long time to come. As long as the need is there, we'll be doing this program," O'Brien promises.

We’ll gladly take just about any unused school supplies appropriate for students grades K though 6, but here’s a rough list to help you with your donation:bam backpack straps Backpacks, big erasers, binders, color pencils, crayons (16 or 24 count), filler paper, folders, glue sticks, markers, notebooks, pencil boxes, pencils, pens, rulers, and scissors. Who gets the supplies that are donated locally?Local children grades K through 6 get the backpacks and supplies. WNDU-TV works with agencies in WNDU-TV’s 10-county viewing area to identify low-income children who need the supplies. Provide a team of volunteers to support the warehousing and packing efforts. We may have volunteer opportunities for adults in July and August. If your business has gone through changes and you have an abundance of outdated company office supplies, Pack-A-Backpack can put them to use.
